When was the last time you judged something or someone and found out you were wrong? Anytime I am guilty of this, it is too often.
Recently (around the 4th of July) my husband and I were driving out to my sister's house which is about a thirty or forty minute drive from the city. We passed a house that I have driven by many times before and had really never noticed. Since I was in the market for "Americana" pictures, I noticed this small, white-framed house with an American flag. It took my eye--it was so simple--and the flag just seemed to jump out at me. I asked my husband to stop so I could take a picture.
He stopped and I hopped out of the car and took the first picture. I remember thinking something like, "Oh, this precious little house where some precious people live--I know they care about their place--it is nice and neat--they are proud and patriotic with the flag and all." And my mind continued, "But, only a few small bushes on the side--I wish they had some more landscaping--it really would add to their little house and it would give them something beautiful to look at down here in the flatlands of Arkansas where soybeans and rice farms are in abundance.

These silos were right across the road from the house.
Then I walked several feet to my left to get another angle of the house and I thought I caught a peek of something.

Curiously, I walked a few more steps.........

and a few more.....................................

and caught a glimpse of this...............

some of the most beautiful, natural landscaping I've ever seen--God's cypress swamps! This is only fifty feet or so behind the little house, but it is not visible from the road.
Boy, had I ever misjudged what they get to view each day.
It made me stop and think of how many times we misjudge situations or people in our lives. We might be shocked to know what lies just below the surface or a little beyond our present view.
This week, Lord, give us eyes to see beneath the surface--to search a little deeper each person and situation we come in contact with, knowing it is You who supplies the real treasures, you who cultivates the landscaping of our souls to make them beautiful for someone else to behold. Lord, forgive us all the times we have passed a cypress swamp never knowing it was just steps away and give us Your wisdom and Your understanding so that we may recognize the true gifts when we do see them.

He longs to fill our homes, our lives, our souls with rare and beautiful treasures.
By wisdom a house is built,
and through understanding it is established;
through knowledge its rooms are filled
with rare and beautiful treasures. Psalm 24:3,4
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. Proverbs 1:7a
Oh my....such beauty ....and the peace in these pictures! WOW
ReplyDeleteI, too have been guilty of this Dianne! I join you in asking the Lord to give us eyes to see and hearts that would be in line with HIS!
I love you dear friend!
Dianne, thank you so much for sharing this precious post with us. Just recently there was a young mother that I am in contact with that seemed to be avoiding me. Rather than go to her and ask if there was some way that I could help her, I "assumed" she was mad or had chosen to put up a wall. This evening just by asking a simple, "Do you have a busy week ahead of you?" this young mother poured her heart out to me sharing two very major burdens. I SO needed to have your post at this exact time, Dianne. His timing is ALWAYS perfect! Thank you for your obedience.
ReplyDeleteI'm raising my hand here - I have been guilty of this more than a few times. I am thankful when God shows me I've been wrong and allows me to correct mistakes...
ReplyDeleteLovely post. Very calm and insightful. I've been thinking alot about home lately. Thanks for sharing these scriptures. I'm going to be mediating on them this week-
ReplyDeleteI'm with Stacey Dawn...I am guilty of this too! Thanks for the gentle reminder.
ReplyDeleteWe're all guilty, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteRemember, beauty is in the eye
of the beholder. Lord, cause
us to be able to see all Your
beauty.
Love,
Sandy
Beautiful post. God surprises us many times. There is beauty everywhere, but most of the time we do not see it with our physical eyes, we must see it with our spiritual eyes. I borrowed the bible verse at the end of your post and placed on the side bar of my blog.
ReplyDeleteHi Dianne!
ReplyDeleteOh just catching up from the weekend!
Rachael flew back home from Denver {on business trip} and didn't get in until 1:30am Sunday morning... we couldn't sleep until we got that precious text that Juan brought her home safely from the airport {at that hour!}
We went to church late yesterday and had company until evening...
Ahhh a quiet Monday morning in the summer! precious to me too!
I'm reading your last few posts and they are such treasures...
written by one who IS a treasure to so many ♥
I love your Weekend Worship posts, Dianne... they are like a sweet moment of worship for me ♫
I also realllly enjoyed this one...
I often say to people who know I am conservative on many issues that they don't "really know me" just because they have assigned that label...and all they think it means...
I don't share much about the 'giving' part of what Chris and I do because I want my 'treasure stored in heaven' as the Lord so beautifully says...
I can just picture your eyes opening wide when you saw that beautiful pond in the back of that sweet little home. Wow...
and your post about followers is so true... I wish blogger had different labels for that ... maybe "friends" would be nice!
and yes... I've 'met' so many dear sweet people out here... give me hope and joy ...
love to one a 'dear, sweet person' who's out here in our big circle of friends!

Oh, how beautiful! What a great life lesson.
ReplyDeleteHi Dianne! I'm glad you found me too. I love to meet new friends, especially sisters in Christ :)
ReplyDeletePhotoscape does have soft focus, but it's called "blur" there. You can focus on a certain spot in your photo, and blur the rest. Picasa has it also, and there it is called "soft focus". I have them both, because they both have some effects that the other doesn't have. I LOVE to edit my pictures, because I don't take great ones to begin with.
So nice to "meet" you :) Your pictures are beautiful, peaceful, and a breath of fresh air. Your post was so lovely too :)
Love, Kathryn
That's about the size of my little house, and we pulled up what little landscaping we had when we began the house rennovation. (I'm beginning to wonder if it will ever be done.) I don't know when we'll be able to landscape after it's done, and we don't have this kind of natural landscaping! I'm hoping the house will be done by Thanksgiving, but I'm not holding my breath!
ReplyDeleteWow, Dianne, I would have been surprised too!!! This is amazing!!! It makes me think that we have to look beyond the mundane to notice true beauty in everything....What a powerful lesson you taught us...

Cindy
